A Warm and Modern Townhouse Extension

The brief for this ground-floor townhouse extension was clear: create a space that felt modern yet retained a sense of warmth and softness. The design needed to create a seamless flow between the kitchen and dining areas while embracing natural light and framing beautiful views into the garden.

"From the outset, our concept centred on light, openness, and connectivity"

We introduced large sliding glass doors and expansive windows to maximise the garden views, while a thoughtfully placed skylight above the dining area ensures daylight cascades into the space throughout the day. These features work together to dissolve the boundaries between indoors and outdoors, creating a calming, airy atmosphere.

The kitchen design blends clean contemporary lines with tactile natural finishes. Light oak cabinetry is paired with soft stone surfaces, while open shelving with integrated lighting adds both function and a touch of understated elegance.

Throughout this space, black accents in the metal fixtures, appliance trims, and feature panels introduce a grounding element to the palette, creating a striking sense of depth against the lighter textured walls and warm timber tones.

"The dining area itself was designed for comfort and connection"

A built-in banquette with deep cushions wraps around a round timber table, encouraging lingering over meals. The textures are soft and inviting, while the tones remain neutral and harmonious, reinforcing the warm yet modern feel.

The adjoining living area continues the flow of this aesthetic. A feature wall with vertical timber slats frames the media unit and an electric fire, balancing the sleek lines of the built-in cabinetry with the tactile warmth of wood. Here again, darker details in the shelving, fire surround, and wall panels provide a bold contrast, lending the space both visual structure and sophistication.

This project is a testament to how considered design can balance modernity with softness and functionality with warmth. By maximising light, strengthening indoor–outdoor connections, layering textures and tones, and punctuating the scheme with darker accents, we created a ground floor extension that feels open yet inviting
